I read that I can use a cold process soap recipe in the hot process too.

I used tallow and coconut oil, per your instructions. I left it white and added rosemary and peppermint essential oils along with some rosemary leaves. Smells great, looks great. When I pulled the silicone aside to look at it, I saw some gaps where the soap didn’t settle all the way down. How do you address this with a thick, bumpy soap when you go to pour it into the mold? Thanks!

Isn’t it too drying on skin? All the literature talks about the fact that a bigger percentage of coconut oil in soap requires a bigger percentage of superfat in order of keeping the soap appropriate for usage on skin.
Did anyone try the recipe as it is? What was your impression?

I’m sure you’ve found the answer by now, but coconut oil shouldn’t be more than 30% of the recipe because it is very drying – unless you are making a laundry or dish soap or a salt spa soap. If olive oil is hard to get, you can use other oils, you just need to run the recipe through a soap calculator; I like LyeCalc. I made a nice soap with 16oz crisco and 8oz coconut oil and it was plenty bubbly; next time I would try a lower ratio.

Wow I really love this post I have made cold pressed soap but it really takes a while for it to cure. I like the fact that hot processed soap is less than 48 hours instead of months so I’ll be trying this for sure just need the slow cooker. Thanks for sharing

I’ve been making this soap for over five years. It’s the absolute best. My husband’s coworker was getting chemo treatments and this was the only soap she could use that didn’t irritate her skin. She had tried all different kinds of natural and organic soaps, no fragrance soaps and all of them really bothered her. I gave her a few bars of Wellness Mama soap to try and it was a game changer. I made it for her for years.

I was looking to make soap for dogs and humans. Can this recipe be used on dogs or will I need to take out the Essential oils? I know dogs can be sensitive to essential. Is there any EO I could use in the soap for dogs or something else that can give it a nice smell?

Try converting ounces to grams. (just google it) That will get you a more accurate measurement.

The only thing is that I would like to make liquid Castille Soap. Do you have to make first the bar soap? or can you do it directly liquid? please, I would appreciate it very much because all the recipes I have seen are for making bar soaps and I want it to come out liquid..

I purchased lye over 2 years ago with the intent of soap-making, but have been intimidated by the lye factor. I don’t have a stick blender, can I just had stir it? Also, if I want to add oatmeal or lavender sprigs, when would be a god time?
Thank you.

I’m new to soap-making and searching for recipes and supplies now. Does your scale really measure to 4.844 oz? I’m researching scales and they don’t specify they measure to that small of a decimal. I know an accurate amount of Lye is crucial to the process.

I used a silicone mold like the one you showed in the video, instead of waiting overnight I popped the soap in the fridge for two hours, took it out and cut it, it was perfect! Thanks for this recipe Katie, I followed it as written and my first attempt at soap making is a success! YAY!

I had this same problem.

I spooned the soap into molds. The next day it was a bit crumbly and the mold designs didn’t take well.

I tried throwing it all back in the pot with some water, but a few days going they are still soft and wet (I lifted one up). I think now I still have to wait longer. I probably added too much water in my attempt to fix the crumble and lost mold designs.

It came out beautiful for my first soap, I added an oz of cocoa butter at the end of the cooking process as it started to cool, and I used maple pancake scent with a little powdered baking chocolate swirled in. I wish I could eat this soap, it smelled so nice and lathered nicely. I didn’t expect it to lather, because all the homemade soap that I have ever purchased did not lather well. Thank you for your recipe!

I’m wondering if you have re-used this recipe as a base for future “melt and pour” projects? Can it be melted down and re-molded with additives such as essential oils?
