Do you add the baking soda and arrowroot to the melted mixture?

You can gently remelt and whisk in more arrowroot. You can put it in a tube and apply it that way, but I find it absorbs better if you also rub it in with your fingers. How much essential oil you use depends on the exact oil you’re using, but in general 1-2% will work and not cause irritation. For this recipe (5 ounces) that would be 25 to 50 drops of essential oil.

It’s the only deodorant that keeps us from smelling, even after a long day of activity.

I use my mixer to whip the deodorant cream and scrape sides every once in a while. It will look like whipping cream 🙂 Then add essential oils (lavender is my choice, doterra brand). Then use a spatula to put them in individual glass jars or plastic. Keep cool or it will melt to a puddle of deodorant…
This process makes the deodorant smooth – no gritty baking soda or chunks. I altered the baking soda until I felt it was good for no rashes. I also don’t use beeswax – that will mark clothes.

So far so good! I never made my own deodorant before but I am in love with the simplicity. Shea better is my new favorite friend! Question: how many drops of essential oil? Also my first batch came out more oily than I would like. Could I re-melt it and add arrowroot to thicken? Also, do you just apply with your fingers? Thanks!

Many baking powders contain aluminum, but baking soda is sodium bicarbonate and does not include aluminum

It says let cool then pour into deodorant container. How cool are we letting it get before pouring in? If it’s liquid, is it going to pour out through the bottom? How do you do this step? Thanks!

Are you using aluminum free?

Body odor is generally a sign of a health imbalance in the body. An underarm detox can help, as can lymphatic massage. If you can consult with a natural healthcare practitioner who works with children they should be able to give you specific help for your daughter’s situation and help find the root cause. https://wellnessmama.com/remedies/detox-your-armpits/

Magnesium hydroxide is water soluble so it can’t be used instead of baking soda as it won’t dissolve in an oil based deodorant. Baking soda can cause irritation in high amounts because it has an alkaline pH of 9 and skin naturally has an acidic pH of about 4.5. If it’s not used in excess though it can help control odor and wetness without causing irritation. If you’re worried about it you could always decrease the amount or replace with arrowroot powder. Here’s a magnesium roll on deodorant recipe if you prefer to use a magnesium based one. https://wellnessmama.com/beauty/roll-on-deodorant/

After doing so reading I saw where magnesium hydroxide is a better choice over baking soda. Do you know the proportions for swapping it for baking soda?

My daughter’s pediatrician printed this article for my child when asked about remedies but I’m curious if it’s recommended for children. I would think so since they have it to me but would like to know others thoughts. We are struggling with smelly pits over here at FIVE years old.

Girl I found your page last week. I have been wanting to make a simple deodorant recipe for long but I was hectic because I sweat a lot and I sometimes end up smelling like sulfur !! ?? But reading your article finally convinced me to give it a try.

I tried the coconut oil recipe thinking that it wouldn’t work, SURPRIIIISE !! It works super good !! I made the recipe and I got 2 reused Arm & Hammer solid bar deodorant containers and I kept it in the fridge because the climate were I live is tropical so the coconut oil would melt. It stays solid in the fridge as a regular deodorant which I love. I only need a tiny bit and it keeps me fresh and not stinky at all. Never buying a commercial antiperspirant deodorant bar again. I recommend this recipe eyes closed and will definitely try the other recipes. THANKS !!!?

You can decrease the baking soda or replace it with arrowroot powder.

If you reduce the beeswax you’ll have a softer deodorant.

So, I am interested in making this homemade deodorant. I currently purchase from someone locally and the texture is soft. Since your recipe indicates that the deoderant will harden after it’s cooled, what ingredient would I need to add more of (or less) in order to make it soft? My idea is to store the deodorant in a 2 oz. glass jar.

Dish soap usually helps with oil stains.

Some people find they have to rub it in and wait a few minutes for it to absorb before putting a shirt on. You also need a thin layer, not nearly as much as what most conventional deodorants advertise using.
