My kids take a plant based Omega blend that they can either chew or swallow the capsules. We switched when I learned that the Omegas come from the algae the fish eat, not the fish themselves. I can share some of the research they’ve done on Omegas.

I switched to a plant based Omega and took either 925 mg or somedays I doubled it. We made the switch when I found out that the fish doesn’t actually make the Omegas, its the plants that they eat.

I think sardines are a great option and would also considering adding in salmon roe and lots of olive oil and avocado oil. If I was pregnant now, i’d focus my diet mostly on protein from quality sources, lots of greens and cooked vegetables, brightly colored things like beets and sweet potatoes and berries, and enough salt and healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, etc).

This is so helpful! I’m 45 and just found out I’m pregnant – God has a great sense of humor, as my youngest is 8! So I’m working to be extra careful with what I eat this time around. In looking at this, and comparing it with the WAPF pregnancy diet, I’m thinking I should try to eat sardines a couple times a week (good thing I like sardines!) and also do some supplementation – maybe the normal recommended dose. I noticed that your pregnancy diet post is several years old. Is there anything that you would change at this point, other than the Omega 3 source?

That is capsules I believe, so do you break them open for younger children, or would you recommend the Nordic Naturals liquid for children?

Also, do you give your children omega supplements as well as vitamin d supplements, or do you feel that is overlapping and not needed? Or is it a seasonal decision for you? Thanks so much!

I’m just curious if you included Ray Peat’s (PHD) research on polyunsaturated fats? Other than food sources (which I allow but allergic to seafood) he would eliminate (ex: avocados) but that is extreme. I won’t touch any Omega supplements as a result of this information. Did you come across his research and draw any conclusions from it? Sometimes I question the ratios conventional sources say are what we need. All the studies I read were short term, much like ingesting synthetic vitamin (hormone) D and both having a boomerang effect later on the immune system with long term use.
I have no idea what we need to thrive, maybe it’s different for everyone but we’re always learning what we once thought was iron clad was incorrect which leaves me questioning everything these days 😉
