As a mom of two little ones, I’ve learned that tuning out the noise and leaning into what actually works for my kids is the real win. I share bits of our offbeat journey on my blog and it’s been healing to connect with others who don’t always follow the “traditional” playbook.

Thanks for chiming in! Katie is still working on her Unstitute resource, but in the meantime, one of my favorites on fostering creativity through education is the book The Call of the Wild and Free by Ainsley Arment.

I have read dozen of homeschool books and this helped me see so much value in letting kids follow their intuition and interest. I would love more resources on how to guide kids, books or experts that have done this well. I know I school more traditionally because of fear, “will my kids know all their math facts”, “do they understand wars”, etc. I honestly want to hear about giving food freedom, I would like to start there. Your method reminded me of “Feeding the Mouth that Bites You” (yet for all ages). BTW the author would be a great guest!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. I homeschool my children and have felt over the past months like something really needs to change in a big way so there’s space for them to learn more organically, be creative, and pursue their interests. You’re right that it’s amazing what children are capable of if they have freedom to think for themselves, problem solve, and create. My oldest is in high school, and I want her to look back on these school years with joy and satisfaction. I am slowly finding ways to reshape our homeschool into something that I want to get up to and live out each day. As I allow my children more freedom and creativity, I myself am more creative and free from the suffocating “shoulds.” It’s a beautiful, healing process. Thanks so much for your encouragement.

Thanks so much for doing your Solo podcast and this follow up blog post! I’ve been following you for years and have always valued your insights. We have been homeschooling our children (9 & 11) since the pandemic. It’s been pretty loose and I am open to different methods and even paradigm shifts so this piece is a breath of fresh air for me. So many people in the homeschool community are obsessed with getting the best curriculum but I always remind myself that we are not trying to recreate school at home. That was the whole point of choosing to homeschool! But with that said, we still have to check the boxes so with that in mind, are there certain curricula you feel that aligns with your values while also fulfilling the necessary state requirements? We have used Khan Academy for some things and I’ve heard you talk about Ron Paul Curriculum. Any others seem worthy in your opinion?
